Vitamin C Explained: What It Does & Why Formulation Matters


ā€œWith Vitamin C, the ingredient matters — but the formulation determines whether your skin can actually benefit from it.ā€


Vitamin C is one of the most researched and widely used antioxidants in skincare.
It can help protect the skin from oxidative stress, support collagen production and improve the appearance of pigmentation and uneven skin tone.

But there is a catch.

Not every product labelled ā€œVitamin Cā€ behaves the same way.

The form of Vitamin C, its concentration, pH, stability, packaging and the ingredients surrounding it can all influence how effective — and how tolerable — a formulation is.

That is why choosing Vitamin C based purely on the percentage written on the bottle can be misleading.

At The Skin Code, we look at the whole formulation, not simply the headline ingredient.

What Is Vitamin C?


Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is an essential nutrient and antioxidant.

Humans cannot manufacture Vitamin C themselves, so we obtain it through our diet.

In skincare, Vitamin C can also be applied topically to deliver antioxidant activity directly to the skin.

The form with the strongest body of evidence is:

L-Ascorbic Acid

L-ascorbic acid is the biologically active form of Vitamin C and the form most extensively studied in topical skincare.

However, it also presents a formulation challenge.

It is relatively unstable and can degrade when exposed to factors such as light, oxygen and heat.

It also generally needs to be formulated at an acidic pH to optimise skin penetration.

This is why a well-formulated Vitamin C serum is much more sophisticated than simply adding Vitamin C to a bottle.

What Does Vitamin C Actually Do?


Vitamin C has several important functions in healthy skin.

1. Provides Antioxidant Protection -Ā Every day, skin is exposed to environmental stressors including:

  • UV radiation
  • pollution
  • smoke
  • environmental pollutants
  • normal metabolic processes

These can contribute to the formation of reactive oxygen species, often referred to as free radicals.

Excess oxidative stress can damage cellular structures and contribute to premature skin ageing.

Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, helping neutralise some of these reactive molecules.
Importantly, Vitamin C does not replace sunscreen.

Think of sunscreen as your primary defence against UV radiation, while antioxidants provide additional support against oxidative stress.

2. Supports Collagen Production

Vitamin C plays an essential biochemical role in collagen synthesis.

It acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in stabilising newly produced collagen.

This makes Vitamin C particularly relevant to healthy-ageing routines.

Over time, consistent use may help support the appearance of:

  • firmness
  • fine lines
  • skin texture
  • overall skin quality

But Vitamin C isn’t a facelift in a bottle.

It is one part of a broader strategy that includes sun protection, Vitamin A where appropriate, barrier support and healthy lifestyle habits.

3. Helps Improve Pigmentation

Vitamin C can also help improve the appearance of uneven pigmentation.
It can interfere with processes involved in melanin formation, which may gradually help brighten areas of excess pigmentation.

This makes it useful in routines targeting:

  • sun damage
  • post-inflammatory pigmentation
  • uneven skin tone
  • dullness

However, pigmentation is complex.

Melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation and solar pigmentation don’t necessarily respond identically.

Vitamin C is usually one component of a pigmentation strategy, rather than the entire treatment.

4. Helps Brighten Dull Skin

ā€œBrighteningā€ is one of skincare’s most overused words.

What we really mean is that Vitamin C may help create a more even-looking skin tone and reduce the appearance of dullness associated with oxidative stress and pigmentation.

The result isn’t changing your natural skin colour.

It’s helping the skin look clearer and more even.

Why Vitamin C Formulation Matters So Much

This is where Vitamin C becomes interesting.

Two products can both advertise:

ā€œ15% Vitamin Cā€Ā 

and behave completely differently.

A good formulation needs to consider:

The form of Vitamin C

  • concentration
  • pH
  • stability
  • delivery system
  • supporting antioxidants
  • packaging**

The percentage alone doesn’t tell you whether the formula is better.

L-Ascorbic Acid: The Gold Standard — But Not for Everyone

L-ascorbic acid has the strongest evidence behind it.

Research has commonly investigated topical concentrations in approximately the 5–20% range, although higher doesn’t automatically mean better.

Increasing concentration can also increase the potential for:

  • stinging
  • redness
  • dryness
  • irritation

This becomes particularly relevant for people with compromised or reactive skin barriers.

Someone using Vitamin A, exfoliating acids or undergoing professional treatments may not necessarily benefit from adding an aggressive acidic Vitamin C serum on top.

More active ingredients don’t automatically create healthier skin.


Why pH Matters


L-ascorbic acid generally needs an acidic environment to remain in its protonated form and penetrate skin effectively.

Many L-ascorbic acid products are therefore formulated at a relatively low pH.

That can be perfectly appropriate for resilient skin.

But on compromised, sensitised or highly reactive skin, that acidity can sometimes cause considerable stinging or irritation.

This is one reason Vitamin C derivatives exist.

Vitamin C Derivatives


Skincare formulators can modify Vitamin C chemically to create more stable derivatives.

These may offer advantages in stability or tolerability, although they do not all have the same amount of clinical evidence as L-ascorbic acid.

Some common forms include:

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate — SAP

A water-soluble Vitamin C derivative that is generally considered more stable and often better tolerated than L-ascorbic acid. It can be particularly interesting in formulations designed for oily or blemish-prone skin.

Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate — MAP

Another water-soluble derivative commonly used for antioxidant and brightening support. It can be formulated at a less acidic pH and may suit people who find traditional L-ascorbic acid uncomfortable.

3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid

A modified Vitamin C molecule designed to offer improved stability while retaining useful antioxidant and brightening activity. It has become increasingly popular in modern Vitamin C formulations.

Ascorbyl Glucoside

Vitamin C attached to glucose. It is generally more stable than pure L-ascorbic acid and is commonly incorporated into brightening and antioxidant products.

Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate — THD Ascorbate

An oil-soluble Vitamin C derivative. It's lipid-soluble nature makes it particularly interesting from a formulation perspective and allows it to be incorporated into different types of skincare systems.

It is often well tolerated, although claims that it is categorically ā€œbetterā€ or penetrates deeper than L-ascorbic acid shouldn’t be treated as settled fact.

Does That Mean L-Ascorbic Acid Is Always Better?
No.

This is where skincare marketing can become too simplistic.
L-ascorbic acid has the strongest clinical evidence.

But the theoretically most powerful ingredient isn’t necessarily the best ingredient for your skin.

A beautifully formulated derivative that you comfortably use every morning may ultimately be more useful than a high-strength L-ascorbic acid serum that leaves your skin irritated and that you stop using after two weeks.

Efficacy matters. Tolerability matters too.

The Antioxidant Partnership: Vitamin C + Vitamin E + Ferulic Acid

One of the best-known formulation strategies combines:

Vitamin C + Vitamin E + Ferulic Acid

Vitamin C primarily functions in the aqueous environment, while Vitamin E is lipid-soluble.

Ferulic acid is another antioxidant that can also improve the stability and antioxidant performance of certain Vitamin C/Vitamin E formulations.

There is published evidence supporting this antioxidant combination.

This illustrates something important:

Ingredients don’t function in isolation.

Sometimes the supporting ingredients surrounding an active are part of what makes the formulation effective.

How Can You Tell if Vitamin C Has Oxidised?

L-ascorbic acid is vulnerable to oxidation.
A fresh formulation is generally clear to pale yellow, although this varies depending on the complete formulation.

As oxidation progresses, some Vitamin C products may become:
yellow → orange → increasingly brown

A slight colour doesn’t automatically mean a product is unusable because formulations differ.

But a significant colour change, particularly accompanied by changes in smell or texture, can indicate degradation.

Packaging therefore matters.

Good Vitamin C packaging should minimise unnecessary exposure to:

  • light
  • oxygen
  • heat

Opaque or UV-protective packaging and well-designed dispensing systems can help.

Should Vitamin C Be Used in the Morning?

Often, yes.

Vitamin C is particularly useful in a morning routine because its antioxidant activity complements daily photoprotection.

A simple routine might be:

Cleanse → Vitamin C → Moisturiser → SPF 50+

Vitamin C and sunscreen work differently.

Vitamin C helps provide antioxidant support.

Sunscreen reduces UV exposure.

One doesn’t replace the other.

Can Vitamin C Be Used With Vitamin A?

Yes.

There is a persistent skincare myth that Vitamin C and retinoids can never be used together.

That isn’t accurate.

They can exist within the same overall skincare routine.

But that doesn’t mean everybody should layer strong L-ascorbic acid and a potent retinoid together in the same application.

For many clients, we prefer:

AM — Vitamin C + SPF

PM — Vitamin A + barrier support

This isn’t because the ingredients magically ā€œcancel each other out.ā€

It’s simply an elegant way of distributing active ingredients across the day and reducing unnecessary irritation.

What Works Well Alongside Vitamin C?


Vitamin C can sit beautifully within a broader routine containing:

Vitamin E — complementary antioxidant support.

Ferulic Acid — can complement and stabilise certain antioxidant formulations.

Hyaluronic Acid — supports hydration.

Ceramides — support barrier function.

Niacinamide — can support barrier health and improve uneven skin tone.

Peptides — can complement healthy-ageing routines.

Vitamin A — often used separately in the evening.

And depending on the product and treatment plan, newer regenerative ingredients such as PDRN/polynucleotides, growth-factor formulations and exosome-based products may also sit within the broader routine.

They don’t need to be mixed together in one application to be useful.

Who Should Be More Careful With Vitamin C?


Vitamin C isn’t automatically appropriate just because it is an antioxidant.

Extra care may be appropriate if you have:

  • a compromised skin barrier
  • eczema or dermatitis
  • perioral dermatitis
  • highly reactive rosacea
  • significant sensitivity
  • recently undergone certain professional treatments
  • already use multiple strong active ingredients

In these situations, formulation and timing become particularly important.

Sometimes the appropriate approach is a gentler Vitamin C derivative.

Sometimes it’s a lower concentration.

And sometimes the right decision is to repair the skin barrier first.

Is 20% Vitamin C Better Than 10%?

Not necessarily.

Percentage has become an easy marketing tool because consumers can compare numbers.

But skincare isn’t that simple.

A higher concentration can potentially deliver more active ingredient — but only if the formulation is stable, appropriately delivered and tolerated by the skin.

A poorly formulated 20% product isn’t automatically superior to an excellent 10–15% formulation.

And a product you can’t comfortably use isn’t particularly useful.

Don’t shop for Vitamin C by percentage alone.

Vitamin C is an excellent example of why we don’t believe skincare should be selected from ingredient lists alone.

When choosing Vitamin C, we consider:

1. What form of Vitamin C is being used
2. How it has been formulated and stabilised
3. The concentration and pH
4. What other antioxidants or supporting ingredients are present
5. Your skin barrier and sensitivity
6. What else you’re already using
7. What you’re actually trying to treat

For one person, that might mean a well-formulated L-ascorbic acid serum.

For another, a gentler Vitamin C derivative may make far more sense.

The strongest formula isn’t automatically the smartest formula.

The goal is a product your skin can tolerate consistently enough to actually benefit from it.
